Dendrobates is a genus of poison dart frogs native to South America. It once contained all poison dart frogs; until recently, binomial names such as "Dendrobates pumilio" and "Dendrobates terribilis" were scientifically valid. The genus still retains many species, however. Dendrobates species were considered to be good luck talismans by the native people of South America; they were also used as hunting tools. Today, Dendrobates frogs are declining, but they are still common in isolated locations. They are kept as pets.
